Midwives are responsible for taking care of the pregnant woman and the baby which is born. Care usually starts when the mother finds out she is pregnant and decides to go with a midwife for care. Midwives are trained to not just take care of the physical but to know how to connect with the mother emotionally as well. The care provided by the midwife usually extends up to the sixth month of the newborn child. In this article, we will find out the different types of midwives according to their degree.

First type is the nurse-midwife. A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who is educated both in midwifery and nursing and has passed certification. A midwife who have this degree will usually be found working in a hospital, a birth center or even in an independent homebirth practice. They work with doctors and so needs a written permission for any homebirths that they perform. Then you have the certified professional midwife. You will have these people passing the written and the skills exam. They gather experience through academic settings or through apprenticeship. Apprenticeship is encouraged because it gives more practice and learning through experience to the future midwife. The you have the lay midwife. This person is someone who has apprenticed with an experienced midwife and has many trainings and seminars under her belt. They can opt to get certified or not. These lay midwives can be connected to doctors but are not under their authority. These midwives are truly learned through experience and are somewhat old.  We don't suggest this route to clients of our homebirth San Diego service.
